How to Ensure Temporary Smoothness on Muzakio-Ag. Annas Road: A Project on Road Safety

Updated: Feb 3, 2024

In the present project titled "Works to Ensure Temporary Accessibility on the Mouzaki - Agia Anna Road (Municipality of Pyrgos)", temporary measures were taken to restore the road connection between Mouzaki and Agia Anna. The road had experienced subsidence at sporadic points following severe weather events on December 2021, leading the Municipalities of Volakos, Iardanos, and Oleni of the Pyrgos Municipality to declare a state of emergency.

The project, which involved a thorough inspection of the central road network from Mouzaki to Agia Anna, from the Goumero junction at the location of Sopoto to the Agia Anna Local Community, covering a distance of approximately five (5) kilometers, revealed the need for targeted interventions. These interventions were deemed necessary due to subsidence and landslides resulting from the intense weather phenomena described above. In summary, the project included small-scale excavations, road surface restorations, construction of a small retaining wall, and repairs to asphalt pavements.

The completed works include:

1. Verification of the positions and surfaces where the interventions are implemented.

2. Ensuring, by the Contractor, all the necessary permits for the utility networks involved in the Project, especially from the Technical Service of the Public Power Corporation (PPC), as the road in question passes through an optical fiber.

3. Placement of appropriate signage and warning signs for the exclusion of the construction site, as well as the provision of controlled entry and exit points for construction vehicles and machinery.

4. Traffic diversion to the old provincial road from Goumero to Agia Anna.

5. Removal of surfaces where required.

6. Additional excavation to a depth of approximately 50~60 cm for the improvement and restoration of the road infrastructure.

7. Laying a 20 cm thick fine aggregate layer for a safer foundation for road layers and asphalt pavement.

8. Laying a variable-thickness (15 cm) road pavement subbase.

9. Laying a variable-thickness (15 cm) road pavement base.

10. Construction of a retaining wall with a height of up to 2 meters and a length of 20 meters on the left side, along the road's boundary in the 2nd intervention location.

11. Laying the final asphalt pavement layer in two layers and integration with the existing road structure.
